How to repair holes in plasterboard walls

So you hung one too many pictures in your hallway…

Installed a coat rack, put a tonne of bags on it and it pulled straight out of the wall…

Someone threw open the door, and it put a hole in your plasterboard wall…

These things happen.  Don’t worry, this is how you fix it.

If the hole is the size of a nail or screw (very small), here’s what you will need to do…

SUPPLIES:

Here is what you will need:

  • DIY Total Joint Finish compound
  • DIY 100mm Broad Knife
  • DIY Hand Sander
  • DIY Sandpaper 150 Grit
  • DIY Dust Mask
  • Paint (that matches the wall)

First:  With the Broad knife, smooth on a glob of compound over hole.  Let filling dry as per manufactures recommendations.

Then: With sandpaper 150 grit on a handsander, sand the surface of the patch until it is smooth.

Finally: Then paint the corrected area.

If the hole is  upto 25mm large…

  • DIY Boral Patch cote 20
  • DIY Patching Plaster
  • DIY Trimming Knife
  • DIY Plasterboard Screws
  • DIY Supa-Weave F.G.Tape
  • DIY 100mm Broad Knife
  • DIY Hand Sander
  • DIY Sandpaper 150 Grit
  • DIY Dust Mask
  • Paint (that matches the wall)

First: Take your plaster F.G. Tape and place it over the hole.

Then: Use your Broad knife to smooth on the plaster compound.

Next:  After waiting the required time for the patch to dry, use 150 grit sandpaper and handsander to sand the surface of the patch until smooth.

Finally: Paint the area to match the rest of your wall.

If the hole is larger than 25mm…

SUPPLIES:

  • DIY Patching Plaster
  • DIY Trimming Knife
  • DIY Plasterboard Screws
  • DIY Supa-Weave F.G.Tape
  • DIY 150mm Broad Knife
  • DIY 100mm Broad Knife
  • DIY Hand Sander
  • DIY Sandpaper 150 Grit
  • DIY Dust Mask
  • Paint (that matches the wall)
  • Straight Edge
  • Keyhole Saw
  • Screw Driver

First: Cut around the hole with a Platerboard keyhole saw so that the hole is either a square or a rectangle.

Then: Measure the hole and see if it’s next to any wall studs.

Next (If there is a stud ignore this step.)  If there’s no stud, measure and cut two small pieces of wood, around one and a half times the size of the hole.  Place the pieces on the inside of the wall, perpendicular to the floor and parallel, on either side of the hole. With plasterboarl screws, screw in the top and bottom of each piece through the outside of the wall.

After Cut out a piece of plasterboard that is the size of the hole.  Fit it into the hole, and screw this new piece into the backers you have just created.

Finally:  Cover all the screws you just made and the joins with F.G Tape. Then you are ready to finish up. Apply Boral Patch Cote 20 with your Broad knife, let it dry, sand down, and then prime and paint.
